WeKey teach group piano lessons for beginners at Primary School. We work with 3 or more students per group and focus on teaching piano, and the language of music, through the lens of our students musical interest. We pride ourselves in being able to adapt our lessons to musical requests; our teachers are able to listen to music and understand how to play what they have heard, even if it is the first time they are hearing that piece of music.
Our lessons might look like this: A student coming into a lesson and mentioning they have heard a piece of music from a film over the weekend that has inspired them, we have a listen as a group. Our teachers are then able to adapt their lesson with the music just mentioned, teaching the inspired group their fun music request, all while unfolding a key learning outcome through their choice. For the teacher this will mean in the moment working the music out by ear, simplifying it possibly, and then collaboratively arranging the music over the space of the lesson through collaborative and engaging learning (often with lots of musical games too!).
Through the course of our lessons we are prioritising not just piano playing but musical language learning, this means not just the physical playing of music but also understanding how to listen to and comprehend the music we play. We hope to become more autonomous musical learners, just like our teachers, understanding the foundations to access music from listening. We also cherish and promote creativity as a way to realise an individuals learning in their own way; At WeKey we are not just performers, we are expressing ourselves through the language that we are learning.
How We Work
Details
Our lessons are usually 30 or 60 minutes in duration.
The price of each lesson is £11.00 (30 minutes) or £18.00 (60 minutes), grouped into a single termly payment. With a minimum of 33 club weeks across the year (with slight variations depending on the school calendar and teacher absences), this usually works out at approximately £121.00 or £198.00 per term respectively.
We also offer a 20% discount for additional siblings, helping make learning music together as a family that little bit more accessible.
We’re passionate about working with schools through the Government’s Pupil Premium scheme too, so if your child may be eligible for support, please contact your school to explore the options available.
Having access to a keyboard or piano at home is important for making the most of our lessons and continuing the musical exploration between sessions. It doesn’t need to be expensive - we have some great recommendations for keyboards from around £60, so please do ask us!
As mentioned elsewhere, we’re proud to support our teachers’ own musical engagements alongside their teaching. Where a lesson cannot be covered by another WeKey teacher and is missed due to teacher absence, there will be no charge for that lesson. Unfortunately, as a group service we cannot make up or refund lessons missed through individual pupil absence; however, there will also be no charge where a lesson cannot take place because of an unforeseen school closure.
